Diamond clarity refers to the presence of internal inclusions and external blemishes within a diamond.

What are inclusions?
Inclusions are naturally occurring internal characteristics found within a diamond. These can include tiny crystals, feathers, clouds, or other internal markings formed during the diamond's creation process. Most inclusions are microscopic and do not affect a diamond's beauty when viewed with the naked eye.

What does "Included" mean?
"Included" is a clarity grade used for diamonds with more noticeable inclusions. In diamonds graded I1, I2, or I3, these inclusions may be visible without magnification and can impact the diamond's transparency, brilliance, and overall appearance.

Clarity is graded under 10x magnification and affects a diamond's rarity and value. While clarity is important, a diamond's sparkle is influenced more by its cut quality.

Clarity Grades

IF (Internally Flawless)

No internal inclusions visible under 10x magnification. Extremely rare and highly valued.

VVS1 & VVS2 (Very, Very Slightly Included)

Contains minute inclusions that are extremely difficult to detect under magnification. Appears flawless to the naked eye.

VS1 & VS2 (Very Slightly Included)

Minor inclusions that are difficult to see under magnification. Typically eye-clean and offers excellent value.

SI1 & SI2 (Slightly Included)

Noticeable inclusions under magnification. Many SI1 diamonds remain eye-clean, while some SI2 diamonds may show visible inclusions.

I1, I2 & I3 (Included)

Obvious inclusions that may be visible to the naked eye and can affect transparency, brilliance, and durability.

Final Thoughts

For most buyers, VS and SI diamonds provide the best balance of appearance and value. In many cases, a well-cut VS or SI diamond will look just as beautiful as a more expensive IF or VVS diamond when viewed without magnification.
